Review

URBAN ASSAULT (MILSIM) SITE REVIEW 23rd January 2010

It’s a cold day outside with a temperature of perhaps 4 degrees (celcius). Does that bother the players? HELL NO! This is Urban Assault.

I’ve heard about the site many times through the grape vine and everyone raves about it. Because of this i’ve been a bit sceptical and kept my distance. Now (not possibly being able to play airsoft as much as i’d like soon) i decided to give it a go. Boy am i glad i did! The site itself is HUGE and you can easily find yourself going from building to building and wondering where you are at first. Some of the buildings on site are 2 floors with stairs, fire escapes and multiple corridors and windows. This makes for interesting gameplay as you never know if there’s an enemy through the door, up the stairs or outside a window and getting ready to get you!

As this was a MILSIM day there were ammo restrictions being NO HI CAP MAGAZINES. If you were caught with one, you would be asked to leave the site. That said you were allowed to carry as many mid-cap or lo-cap (and pistol) magazines as you wanted. :D   The beginning of the day began with setting up team colours and being given our objectives for the morning and told about extra rules for the game day. These were written down on the opposite side of a map which was given to ALL of the players (which was a very nice touch i must say).  On staircases you could only shoot on semi-auto (to minimise overkill) and there had to be 3 medics on the entire side. The medics would obviously hand out a bandage to a downed player and he’s back in the game. Get shot again though and start the walk to the regen point and wait for 5 mins.

Objectives for the day were basic but detailed and challenging. These were to secure a building known as the police station, hold it and display the team’s designated flag. Then attack the enemy base, collect money and drugs and take them back to our base. This was finalised by arming a bomb at the enemy base before lunch.  The objectives are a lot easier said than done, as enemy forces had enough space to try and move through buildings to out-flank us, resulting in some very interesting fire-fights.

The afternoon was a continuation of sorts with different objectives. Again hold the police station, secure a VIP, destroy a tank outside the enemy base (that’s right there were 2 PT76 tanks) and a 30 cal. The final objective being to hold the police station with as many objectives as possible.  As you can see they’ve put a lot of thought into this which creates an immersive level of gameplay. However, the site did seem to be lacking at times. Often players would forget their objectives due to the intensity of some firefights which just meant trying to take a main building and (more often than not) getting slaughtered.  Being a medic i found this was the case for the afternoon. Dotting from sover to cover patching people up, i soon realised that many players had forgotten their objectives (as did i for a long time) and were not pushing on them.

All in all the day was a success. I’ve never had so much fun being beaten so badly. The site was well run at a fantastic location with very friendly players, marshalls and staff (including the gentleman at the on site burger van). My only criticism could be that more support from marshalls would have been good to remind us of objectives (but no need really as it’s more fun) and to enforce the ROF rules at times (after seeing a guy get hosed in the face with 5 rounds at about 0.5-1.0 metres).

For anyone after some hard and fast, CQB, Mil-sim action mixed with friendly players, Urban Assault is worth checking out.

2. Jace on Airsoft Barracks writes:  You might have noticed, but i have been producing a short film called Exit Strategy. It’s an action flick set in northern Pakistan. Most of the equipment used is airsoft equipment and i’m also an avid airsoft player…  Check out the thread on ASB (off topic section). We’re also on Facebook and our website is www.blademediaproductions.com

3. Patrick writes in:  Hey! i’ve been listening for only a couple of shows but i love it! I am new to airsoft and i don’t own one. i am interested in getting a good SMG for under 100$. I am not be going to do more than couple skirmishes and nothing official or organized except in the woods my friends play in. I am looking at the scorpians and the MP5s and i need help.

4. Joey writes:  I was looking around on rcgroups.com, a R/C aircraft forum, (since I just got into R/C fight) and several guys were talking about more realistic combat with airsoft guns. But after reading their responses, I had to set them straight because of how misinformed they were.  I was wondering what you guys thought of putting an airsoft gun on an R/C plane. Maybe you could call in a strafing run during a game?  …We found your answer: check out ThinkGeek’s RC Copper

Review

Chris had a chance to get his hands on the latest offering from Echo, the Red Star Covert.  Of course since it’s a “Mechbox Mechanic” review, you know he stripped this thing down to the last screw to give you his thorough opinion.  Listen in as he shares his findings with the show (but we’ll give you a hint…he likes it!).

Listener Segment

1. Listener EndGamE  from Greenville, NC writes:. I wanted to let you know that version 2.0 of the AirsoftCalc iPhone/iPod touch application is up. I tried it out and it’s so much better than the previous version. It still counts FPS, bb weight, and force like the last version, but now there are weapon and gear sections. You can list your gun, its internal and external parts and your gear. For instance, if you have a KWA M4 with a Super Core Piston, a pmag, a tightbore barrel, and a lipo, all of that can be listed. There’s also a gear section where you can put your Tornado grenades (including spoon kits/distraction devices) or vests. It’s great for keeping track of what you have. Plus, you can easily pass your iPhone/iPod touch around and have people drool over your loadout without having to show them! Great software, I give it an 8 out of 10 because it isn’t the nicest looking app, but it’s functional and does very well for a free app.

2. Listener Eli writes: you guys asked for some funny pics so this is one from a private skirmish i had with my team. this was from a fun end of the day game, and was almost a year ago but i thought you’d enjoy it. i was the juggernaut and could only die from a headshot so i had to make sure i couldnt feel much…. Oh yeah, check out the claymore codpiece!

3. Listener Cameron writes: My brother is looking for a new M4 and his budget is under $300…But the thing is that he really likes the Magpul PTS MOE Hand Guards…any suggestions, best makers, good and bad and ugly about the guns?
