Airsoftology Episode #14: “A Chip off the Old Block”

July 26th, 2009

Chip off the Old Block

We’re back for show #14 and in our humble opinion, this has turned out to be a good show.  A bit longer than most, but full of information and on-point throughout.

And speaking of information, Tim has a message to share with you out there.  “Wear a facemask or mouthguard!”  He took a BB to the tooth last game and now has 1/2 a tooth to show for it.  A long plane flight home and hundreds of dollars later, he’s all fixed up.  So what did we learn from his mistake?

Don’t be a Tim and wear your mouth protection!

We know we keep saying we want to hear from you, and you are sending us some good stuff!  But…it’s time we raised the stakes a bit.  We’re starting to collect swag from retailers, distributors and manufacturers alike and they are piling up.

I guess what we are saying is that we want to “buy” your contribution to the show.  Send us a good voicemail, make a show segment, or write that awesome email that tells everyone the ultimate airsoft secret and we’ll send you something in return.

Who knows what you’ll get, but we can promise this:  The better the contribution the better the reward.  Just make sure to include your name and address when you contribute so we know where to send your swag… and please put it at the end of the segment/email/voicemail so we can edit it out before it goes live on the air. (We are very careful about your privacy, if you don’t want your real name used in a segment, just tell us what you’d rather be called)

Informative with a touch of humor; we break down the news, gear reviews and tech tips that you want to hear.

Show Notes:

News

  - Marui’s Five-Seven has been flying off the shelves the past few weeks since its release.  Of course, Tim thinks it has looks only a mother can love (who asked him anyway). It looks to be a quality replica that will be a stable in the sidearm world for quite a while.  For about $140US over at Redwolfairsoft.com, it’s not a bad deal.

- KWA’s new M11A1 NS2 sub machine gun is out and it is a BB hose.  They came in at the local shop and WOW, you can empty a magazine in a bit over 2 seconds.  If your looking complete your “Chuck Norris Delta Force” loadout, this is a must have!

 - Echo1 has released their very first Metal Body M4 this past week.  At $230 it is priced right and is poised to make a big splash in the airsoft world.  You can get yours at your favorite airsoft retailers. Oh yeah, they sent us one to review too!  If you want to know how it sized up to the stiff competition, you have to listen to the show.

- WGC sent us some news on their newest GBB rifle, the WE SCAR in Tan.  Looks good, and it’s priced very right at $220 US.  If you were holding out for a GBB rife, it might be worth the wait.

- OK, this is just plain cool.  We’re not sure if it’s real or not, but it looks like it could be.  Ebaybanned.com is working on a landwarrior project, complete with the heads up display, GPS tracking of your team, and a commander laptop interface. I think I broke my mouse button is refreshing the page waiting for preorder to begin.

- Back on the topic of Echo1, they have a teaser image on their forums for an upcoming release.  Head over there and check it out, we’d like to hear what you think it is.  We have our own ideas but we’re not sharing…

Review

Echo1 is our first official review segment contributor!

The guys at Echo1 were kind enough to send us one of their new Stag-15 Metal Body M4s to test, unsolicited no less.  While we’re waiting for the invoice to follow (we know it must be a mistake, I mean who in their right mind would send us a gun???)  We decided we would run it through the paces.

We cover it from the front to the back, and the inside as well.  Listen in as we hit the highlights of this very nice AEG, link to the detailed full review can be found over at www.mechboxmechanic.com.

If reading isn’t your strong suit and you are in the market for an affordable metal M4, just grab one….seriously!  Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

This is a Must Buy!

Tech Tip

Chris returns, well, actually his disembodied voice does.  He found some time in his crazy schedule to record a tech tip for us this week, and it’s informative as ever.  The topic is: How to lower your AEG’s FPS for free.  Listen in, or check out the tip on his site: www.mechboxmechanic.com

Airsoftology Vocabulary Lesson

Chris sent in this show’s airsoft vocabulary lesson, and it should hit home to any airsofter out there.  Webster, eat your heart out.

This show’s word is: Dramasofter

dra-ma-soft-er [drah-muh-sawft-er] -noun

1. An overly egocentric airsoft player who turns something unimportant into a major deal.

2.An airsofter who blows things way out of proportion when ever the chance is given.

Note: There are two known sub-species of “Dramasofters”.

Direct Action Dramasofters – will actively yell/whine/cry about at anything remotely unfair (in their minds) while on the field. These creatures can be angered easily and should not be approached in the wild.

Distinguishing characteristics are: wild displays of emotion and profanity in the presence of others, shooting at players with their hopup turned all the way up, bbs flying off into space and swearing on Odin’s beard that the intended target (that isn’t anywhere near the bbs flifing wildly) are not calling their hits. The common mating cry is believed to be  loud, and repeating  “REF!!!!”  and “CALL YOUR HITS!!!!!” sounds.

After Action Dramasofters – will immediately after a game run home, jump on the local field’s forum and start complaining about hot guns /cheating / how every one is a noob but them (or all of the above). This species is normally timid in the company of others, but will turn wildly aggressive in the presence of an online airsoft forum.

Distinguishing characteristics are: The distinct lack of punctuation used in writing and the “wall of text” left behind in their wake. Their mating cry is believed to be the repeated use of the words “teh” and “n00bz”, however there has not been a recorded case of a mated pair documented.

Listener Segment

- Listener William writes in asking about teflon silver coated wire.  We give him a few of our top-secret tips on what it’s all about, and set up our next show’s tech tip on lowering electrical resistance.

- SlickAxe at NLairsoft.com sent us a but of news about the newly formed European Airsoft Association.  Check out the info at his site, direct link is here.

- Mike, aka ‘Lotto”, from New York writes in asking about LiPo batteries.  While we didn’t have room to answer the question on this show, but we are queing it up for a future review segment.

- TJ calls in asking about the Sten MkII Submachine gun replica made by Viva.  Steve’s going to look into it and we’ll have his answer on the next show.

- Chiefsnake from the Airsoft-Barracks.com forums asks about night vision goggles, and we answer to the best of our ability.

Airsoftology Episode #13: “The System is Down”

July 14th, 2009

We’re back for show #13 and Steve, Tim and Jonathan are here again to take you through the wild world of airsoft…in song?!!!??!  We blame the excessive caffeine.   Excuses aside, we promise not to sing ever again. Really.  :)

Clark joins us again for this show as a in-studio guest, but this time he’s more color commentary than interviewee.   Tim’s back in rare form as well, bringing his famous “sniper-ego”.  Lets just say that Jonathan has his hands full again.

Full of the stuff you want to hear, this promises to be another great (and wild) show.

Informative with a touch of humor; we break down the news, gear reviews and tech tips that you want to hear.

You can download or listen to the show by choosing your option below.

News

- G&G has a new L96 gas sniper rifle on the horizon and so far it looks good from the pictures.  Check out their site for all of the details.

- The long awaited Magpul UBR stock is finally out for real-steel, and they have an airsoft version as well.  The good news is that it is awesome, the bad news is that it’s almost sold out everywhere and costs $175 US.  You can look at the pictures and drool here, and if your lucky enough to get one we are jealous!

-Redwolf put together a rather funny “pain test” video, answering the age old question of what hurts more: a 6mm or 8mm BB?  Watch it here and judge for yourself.

- Speaking of videos, Airsoft GI has put out a blooper reel of their youtube video outtakes. Funny stuff.  Check it out here.

- After a few listener emails, we took notice of a preorder over at Airsoft GI for the (KWA) Umarex MP7 for $255.  A bunch cheaper than we though in the last show, and if your interested you better preorder.  With all the hype we expect them to go very fast!

- Echo1 has 2 BIG pieces of news this show and one is a game-changer.  1st, they have a new metal body Stag Arms M4 on the books.  All we can say is move over CA, there’s a new Sheriff in town.

- The second bit of Echo 1 news is a doozie!  They have been put through the hardest test in airsoft and have came out victorious!  They are now ASGK certified…to us normal people that means they have gained the Japanese airsoft regulatory commission’s approval to sell airsoft replicas in Japan, joining the hollowed ranks of Marui and WA.  Our hats off to you!  Read all about it on their blog at their site: www.echo1usa.com

- Finally, Well has a new AW .338 gas sniper on the market, and it very affordable if your on the hunt for a rifle.  No talk about the quality, but it looks to be a direct copy of the Ares AW .338.  If your interested, check it out at Everything Airsoft.

Review

- While this show’s review isn’t a new product, it is one of our all time favorite airsoft parts on the market today.  If you haven’t heard about this yet, let us introduce you to the pinnacle of pistons:  The Super Core piston by System.

The company name’s not a typo….this isn’t from Systema, but the other super-custom Japanese part company of a similar name.  Listen in and hear our review of this piston among pistons, and if you are interested in buying one (and you should) you can find them here and here.

Tech Tip

- We’ve had many requests for this tip, especially as you guys and gals start getting into the serious upgrading that we sometimes talk about on the show.  You’ve twisted our arms enough so we finally gave you the dirt on Bore Up Cylinder kits.

We cut through all the half-truths and misinformation around this mystifying part and give you the best common sense explanation that we can.  Join us as we explain how the elusive Bore Up kit actually works, and when you’ll need one.
